Correspondence

276.  EBB to Julia Martin

As published in The Brownings’ Correspondence, 2, 86.

[Hope End]

Thur[s]day night. [15 November 1827] [1]

My dear Mrs Martin,

It is a great blessing to me to be able to say that the mind of my poor Mother has subsided from the first agony of grief into more composure & quiet. She has been relieved, tho’ somewhat exhausted, by her frequent bursts of tears today; and I do not think her general health injured.

The kindness of your note, dear Mrs Martin, affected us all; and I may assure you, from the particular object of it, that when she is able to see anybody she will be glad to see you. She desires her kindest love to you—and pray

believe me always

Yours most truly

E B Barrett.

Address, on integral page: Mrs Martin.

Publication: None traced.

Manuscript: Wellesley College.

1. Letter apparently relates to the death of Mary Moulton-Barrett’s mother on 10 November 1827. The first Thursday following that date was 15 November.
