Saturday morning. [?13 September] [1851] [1]

Dear Mr Fox,

I am sorry to have to say that my husband is too unwell to keep our engagement with you today. He struggled hard against an overwhelming sick headache, & at last had to give up & lie down on the bed & resign himself to a necessary disappointment on both his side & mine. Will you forgive us for our misfortunes?

Very faithfully yours

Elizabeth Barrett Browning

Address: W. J. Fox Esqre / 3. Sussex Place / Regent’s Park.

Publication: None traced.

Manuscript: Armstrong Browning Library.

1. Year provided by reference to the return address; conjectured day and month, by reference to letter 2957, in which EBB discusses RB’s ill health.
