Chère Madame, Je ne pourrai pas vous attendre demain dimanche. Je suis forcée d’aller au théatre toute la journée. Je crois que la piece sera jouée mercredi. [2] Je ferai mon possible pour vous envoyer une loge, mais on en donne tant aux journalistes et si peu à l’auteur, que je suis forcée de prévoir le cas ou je n’aurais que deux fauteuils à vous offrir. Vous en contenteriez vous? ou prefériez vous une loge pour la 2de représentation?

Un mot de réponse. À vous de cœur, ainsi qu’à monsieur Browning.

Translation:

Dear Madam,

I will be unable to wait for you tomorrow, Sunday. I am forced to go to the theatre for the entire day. I think the play will be performed Wednesday. [2] I will do my best to send you tickets for a box, but they give so many to the journalists and so few to the author, that I am forced to anticipate the possibility that I will have only two seats to offer you. Would that be satisfactory or would you prefer a box for the second performance?
