Correspondence

444.  EBB to Hugh Stuart Boyd

As published in The Brownings’ Correspondence, 3, 10–11.

Hope End.

Saturday evening. [31 March 1832] [1]

My dear Mr Boyd,

I think it may be better to write directly to yourself, on the subject you enquire about.

I have not any complete edition of either Hesiod or Theocritus; and would not write to you by today’s post, that I might have time to borrow them. Mr Deane however, to whom I sent, is without either. Dalzel gives very copious extracts; & these I have examined,—but I cannot find in them, ανηρ in the right position. I will try to procure the books somewhere else,—and if I succeed, you shall hear again from me.

Yours affectely

EBB

Address, on integral page: H S Boyd Esqr

Publication: Diary, p. 304.

Manuscript: Wellesley College.

1. Dated by Diary, p. 230, entry of 31 March, in which EBB mentions sending to Dean to borrow books, and the indication the previous Thursday that she was gathering examples of the hiatus.

2. As these examples have little meaning out of context, we feel it is unnecessary to offer a translation.
