Correspondence

231.  EBB to Mary Moulton-Barrett

As published in The Brownings’ Correspondence, 1, 244.

[Hastings]

[ca. June 1826] [1]

I cant afford you many lines beloved Mama for Trippy Henrietta Bro Sam & myself are on the wing for the races. And yet as I have not written three or four days to you I wont let it occasion any omission to make you dream of neglect in one who loves you dearly and constantly. We did not think the Boys looking well in town, and when desperately wet and blue they made their appearance here from the London stage we certainly did not think them looking better. They now nevertheless begin to “repair”, beneath the influence of these mild refreshing gales—and Sam is enchanting with his gadding tongue, black silk stock, & couleur de rose garters.

Sam and Mary cannot come down here, from pressure of business so I think it unlikely that my Boulogne reverie should be realized. There is a rumour afloat of going for a few days to Brighton which seems more palpable, but you must not mention it either in your letters here or to Hope-End. We are all most happy and have indeed reason to be so!

Docket, on page 4, in EBB’s hand: Not finished or sent, I cannot burn it now.

Publication: None traced.

Manuscript: British Library.

1. Probably written shortly before EBB left Hastings, ca. June 1826.
