[Boston—Sunday, 3 March 1867]

Sunday. Walked to Roxbury to hear Dr Putnam. Inspiration seemed to sit upon his brow. The discourse was upon the love between brothers & sisters and of Jesus as our elder brother—anything more tender or more simple can hardly be imagined.

Afternoon went to see mother at the hotel opposite. She told us that Dr Arnoult had refused to admit Sarah in Lissie’s place to his lessons because she is lame!! If he were not an eccentric almost a mad man I could not forgive him this—especially to say it to mother—it was very cruel.
