[Stratford-on-Avon—Wednesday, 7 July 1869]

Wednesday 7th Eatingllar [sic, for Ettington] Park the Shirley place in the morning. I could not envy Mr. Shirley his Paradise. A little dried up antiquarian who had stifled all feeling for his kind where it interfered with the Shirley interest. The greatest contrast possible to our good generous host Mr. Flower, brewer of Stratford. However he was extremely hospitable and kind.

Went to Malvern in the P.M., found Charlotte Cushman and passed the evening with her and Emma Stebbins and the good Flowers.
