[Manchester—Friday, 8 August 1873]

Friday. Jamie goes to town. Clear & hot.

Friday afternoon came a telegram to say that Laura Johnson and her little daughter from Staten Island were to arrive—as I had rather suggested in my letter that they should come, if at all (I asked them because they said they wished to come) on Saturday morning. I felt they were taking me a trifle too much at their own convenience—however Laura is a friend, with qualities I value, so no fault is to be found. My proposition was a day and night.
