[Manchester—Sunday, 8 August 1875]

Sunday. Mrs Leonowens had scarcely left her room yesterday when Mr. Whittier came, to fill it. The evening was balmy and beautiful but we sat chiefly inside. All except Mr. Whittier went to the umbrella tree this morning, in the afternoon had a lovely time listening to talk and hearing Bayard read. Whittier said it was as impossible to get the vanity out of Tilton as it was to get the ding out of a fire-shovel.
