[Manchester—Tuesday, 8 August 1876]

Tuesday. Came Mr. Clarke. J. and he went yachting with Mr & Mrs Boardman—Mr & Mrs Bristow of the party.

Passed the morning as usual in the fields. Reading and talking German with Anne at home.

Last night was of exceptional loveliness—misty, morning warm. Reading “Die Geschwistern”—Goethe, still. Today Iphigenia.
