1. Dated by reference to the war between Russia and France. It was, however, the Russians who were defeated at Smolensk, 17 August 1812.
2. Kinnersley Castle, Hereford home of Leonard Parkinson, who had been, among other things, a dealer in slaves with George Goodin Barrett, EBB’s father’s late uncle.
3. John Altham Graham-Clarke, EBB’s maternal uncle, had married Leonard Parkinson’s daughter, Mary, on 18 January 1812. They made Kinnersley their home.
