Offered for sale by Myers, Catalogue 262, December 1910, item 412. 5 pp., 12 mo. EBB, in a long letter of thanks & consolation, writes: “I appreciate in every way your beautiful gift. … It is beautiful indeed—and if I did not think first and most of the beauty, it is because your great kindness and the recollection of that and of yr beloved sister [1] from whom I cannot receive any more kindness in this world, are very deeply affecting to me. When I use it, my dear Rosa and Berry, I will think, as I am sure you will wish me to do, both of her and you.... Do not you be too cast down, I beseech you; you are young—and this world, with all those trials in which it abounds and which must be very good for us or they would not be here at all, is not yet ‘a place of misery.’ [2] There is grief and there is joy—and there is peace always to the Christian.”
1. Charlotte, the eldest of the nine Peyton children, had died on 6 September, aged twenty-nine. EBB’s correspondents were born in 1824 and 1827 respectively.
