1189. Richard Hengist Horne to EBB

Two things (2,000 you will say), I have forgotten to reply to.

I will go to see the new Ecce Homo—but what Exhibition do you mean by the Exhibition? [1]

Who can have told you that the Edinburgh & Quarterly Reviews pay 100£ per article! To be sure, if a person wrote an article of some 60 or 70 pages it might be so. I—even radical I—once had 50£ for an article (in the British & Foreign) but it was of 47 pages in length. No—in general the Edbh & Quartly buy from five & twenty shillings a page, to 1½ or 2 guineas—not according to the article, but the favoured individual. As for me, they would be afraid to let me write there.* I never applied to either.

*The Established Clergy are not so timid. They can always retire behind the Book as a shield. I have also strong friends who influence them—and (after all) we have had great rows. They tried to interpolate me. [2]
