My dear Powell,

I would most certainly go with you three-times over on Wednesday had I not unluckily sent, by means of my Sister’s note, the most precise & positive reasons for not going—and how absurd should I look if they were on a sudden confessed to be no reasons at all! My Sister’s excuses would fall to the ground, also. Do let,—as great old Webster says—“what I write be read by your light”—and, counting on me for anything I can do, let me remain, Dear Powell,
