Mr Browning presents his compliments to Sir Villiers Surtees, [1] and begs to apologize for having exchanged hats with him last night by mistake: [2] Mr Browning’s hat being an old one, marked B.

1. Sir Stephenson Villiers Surtees (1803–67), barrister, of Silkmore House, Staffordshire, was Chief Justice of Mauritius in 1835. On 22 June 1865 he received a Doctor in Civil Law from the University of Oxford. He was knighted in 1859.

2. Perhaps at the Athenæum Club, where both Surtees and RB were members.
