Sir,

I beg to express to the Committee of the Literary Fund my extreme sense of the honor done me by their Invitation and the far too flattering request that accompanies it. The only drawback to the gratification with which I venture to accept the one, and comply with the other, is in my own unworthiness—of which I am unaffectedly conscious.

Returning also my best acknowledgments to yourself for the very obliging manner of communicating the desire of the Committee, and for the transmission of the “Report,” with which I was altogether unacquainted, I remain, Sir, respectfully,
