1. 21 February. Other guests present included Lord Houghton (Richard Monckton Milnes) and Edward Lyulph Stanley (1839–1925), third son of the 2nd Baron Stanley of Alderley (1802–69), and his wife, Henrietta Maria (née Dillon-Lee, 1807–95).

2. Charles Francis Adams, (1835–1915), historian, was the second son of Charles Francis Adams (1807–86) and his wife, Abigail (née Brooks, 1808–89). He arrived in England on 16 February and sailed back to America on 26 March (see “Diary of Charles Francis Adams,” 15 February and 26 March 1864, ms at MHS). At this time, he was serving in the union army as a captain in the 1st Massachusetts Volunteer Cavalry.
