1. George Alexander Macfarren (1813–87), composer, son of George Macfarren (1788–1843) and his wife, Elizabeth (née Jackson, 1792–1871). Of poor eyesight from a young age, Macfarren became “virtually blind” about 1860 (ODNB). In 1875 he was elected Professor of Music at Cambridge.
