My dear Reuben,
I duly received your kind note—we are just returned from Hâvre—my wife is the better, I hope, for the journey, and we are preparing for our return Southward—probably to Rome: I heartily wish you had a little more of what we abound in over much—locomotion: but your turn will come some day, no doubt.
Would you have the goodness to receive for me £35..6..10 of Messrs Chapman & Hall, 193 Piccadilly, and to transfer it to me at Sarianna’s ad[d]ress (151. Rue de Grenelle, Faubg St Germain) in the shape of a draft on Rothschild here? I shall also have to trouble you to take the October Dividends the moment they are due,—I hope to get away very soon. Always the old story of trouble to you—for which you get nothing but the very sincere gratitude of

My wife’s kindest regard to you. We rejoice to hear all your family is well: our boy is particularly well, just now. Why don’t you run over & catch a glimpse of your old kind friends, the Poissats? I believe we shall return by the new railway route from Lyons by Chambéry to St Jean Maurienne—over the M. Cenis & then by rail from Susa to Turin & Genoa: it is said to be cheap & expeditious—if only the cold in the mountain pass be endurable: we tried it, years ago, and my wife suffered greatly: but by the new arrangements, and an earlier start, perhaps we may succeed better: anything to avoid the sea-route!
Our address here is 6 Rue de Castiglione, Place Vendôme—but the old address may be safer for remittances.

1. Approximate dating based on the “£35..6..10” that RB asks Reuben to receive from Chapman & Hall. In letter 4248 (postdated 25 September 1858), which was doubtless enclosed with this letter, RB names the same amount. In a letter from Sarianna to Reuben, dated 25 September, she tells him that a draft for that amount “has just reached” her (ms at Wilkes).
