Dearest friend,

I cannot though tired with my Descent (not quite into Acheron) [2] hear of Mrs Dupuy’s triumph & prosperity, without apprizing you of it. ‘She has gained her cause’ .. says my report—‘with every honorable testimony from the Vice Chancellor.’! [3] You are glad I know! It is something to make you glad!

3. George Moulton-Barrett’s verbal report was tailored to suit his listener. Although the Vice-Chancellor awarded Mrs. Dupuy the sum claimed, with costs, his remarks on summing up, as reported in The Times of 16 June, referred again to the possibility of fraud “deeply false and perjury … gross and complete” and evidenced his difficulty in deciding fairly between two such conflicting claims.
