My dear Horne,

I called on Mr Carlyle this morning, and mentioned the matter to Mrs. C.– I believe that your business is done, and that they will lend a very striking portrait, never engraved. Mrs C. will ask leave of Mr C., and of the painter, and write to me—who will write to you.

I will do my best with regard to the names on your list, observing your directions: that best will be indifferent enough, for I am just now chin-deep in work (having four new works in forwardness): but in these cases, where “the gift is small and the love is all,” you will be gracious, as you ever have been, my dear Horne, to
