My dear Horne,

Mrs Carlyle writes to me that her “husband’s deliverance on the question is as follows: ‘If any man, or body of men, wants a likeness of me, let him apply to Lawrence and arrange with him for it. And if it would turn to any account for Lawrence that I should give him two more sittings—to make a new sketch, or mend any of those he has, I would even consent to that: for Lawrence is the only man living who has any of the elements of my face within him—and is besides a very fine little fellow.[’]” So far Mrs Carlyle. She alludes to what she told me was a very good unfinished portrait at the said Lawrence’s, which Mr C. had refused to further by sitting again. Lawrence’s address is “30 something, Charlotte St, Portland Place.”
