1399. Richard Hengist Horne to EBB
As published in The Brownings’ Correspondence, 7, 367.
[London]
Wednesday [Postmark: 11 October 1843]
I think you are wrong, my dear Miss Barrett, as to declining to appear in a portrait. I should have liked to have seen you well-done in black and white—as it is, you must put up with what you find in ink.
You are corresponding with Miss Martineau? I shd prefer to send to her direct rather than to her mother’s at Fludyer St, [1] will you therefore be so kind as [to] forward the enclosed.
Don’t repent about refusing your portrait—don’t take any second thoughts—tis too late. Would it had been .. but why repine—I mean why sh’d I repine.
Yours truly
R.H.
P.S. I leave the note to Miss Martineau open thus (there is nothing in it to read, or you might) you may slip in a note of your own, if you please.
P.S. I hope to call and see Mrs Orme next Monday morning.
Address: Miss E. B. Barrett / 50 Wimpole St / Cavendish Sq.
Publication: None traced.
Manuscript: Pierpont Morgan Library.
1. Before going north to Tynemouth for her health, Miss Martineau had lived with her mother and aunt at 17 Fludyer Street, Westminster.
