1. The American abolitionists Lucretia Mott (née Coffin, 1793–1880) and William Lloyd Garrison (1805–79) were in London in June 1840 for an international conference, at which time Haydon sketched them for inclusion in his depiction of “The Anti-Slavery Convention.” James Mott (1788–1868), who later (1864) founded Swarthmore College, was also a delegate.
