My dear Miss Talfourd,

When I accepted your kind invitation last week, I said nothing about being very poorly at the time—for I was taking physic, and felt sure of being well in a few days: and well, accordingly, I got, as I thought—but yesternight came back my old plague—and the physic-taking had to begin afresh—and this evening I can no longer hide from myself that it will be impossible for me to leave the house to-morrow and make one of your party. Will you accept my excuses, under these circumstances,—and my very sincere wishes for “many happy returns” of the day which this sad headache will prevent me from enjoying in good company—and that of all kind friends at Russell Square!
