1. On 29 November, the Queen and Prince Albert had arrived for a short stay at Drayton Manor, Sir Robert Peel’s estate near Tamworth. A report of the visit, in The Times of 30 November, included the statement that “Haydon’s picture ‘Napoleon at St. Helena’ … was much admired by Her Majesty.” Haydon’s first version of “Napoleon Musing at St. Helena,” completed in 1831, was purchased by Peel.
