My dear Powell,

Will you do me the favor to pay Messrs Smith & Elder, on account of Mr Fearne, [2] the subscription-money for that same book I am to receive? —Otherwise, all parties will think I take its title for “Subscription & Repentance”—whereas, in spite of our fun yesterday, I shall really be glad to have my copy, & reimburse you when next you “come across”

1. Approximate date suggested by RB’s reference to Coningsby (see note 3).

2. Joseph Fearn (1818–88), author of Schism and Repentance, which was published on 30 March 1844. Both RB and Powell appear in the book’s “List of Subscribers.” Fearn, a clerk in an insurance office, lived at Camberwell Grove, near RB.
