Dear E.B.B.—
I reached this house—almost at the same moment with your returned book—Carlyle—on Monday last– Ever since I have been confined with cold—influenza—something very disagreeable—whatever it’s name be– I have crawled out today—partly because I am better—partly because I am sick of nursing and slops—and disposed to doubt about their doing any good–
Yet what weather if one could love or admire anything when under influenza. That ungenerous villain Frost whom you and I both hate so—has dealt gently with us—this year–
All this is to say—Why I have not called to ask for you– J. Kenyon.
