My dear Sir,

I believe I have to thank you for a very kind & appreciated attention in the gift of Mr Patmore’s poems. [2] Allow me .. in that case .. to thank you for them cordially. I shall be able to do so, I am sure, with a fuller understanding of the pleasure thus provided to me,—but Miss Mitford being with me yesterday I suffered her to take away the book for a day or two—following the example (in some inferior degree) of your generosity.
