June 17th 1844

My dear Mr Mathews,

I send you the beginning poem of my second volume: [1] I send packet after packet to you, & you “make no sign” [2] in return. It is ominous: & I have entered upon a wonder as to whether I may not have killed you with ennui.

Forgive me as far as a “soul in bale” [3] can.

Presently I shall be able to write a letter to you—but now I can only write myself with every sense of obligation.
