Offered for sale in Sotheby’s Catalogue, 5 July 1900, lot 98. 2 pp., 12mo. EBB writes: “I am obliged to you for sending me these papers in which there are notices of my work, and with the exception of certain sayings in the Atlas, which placed me violently in a ‘School,’ as people wished to do by the factory children, against which I protest, the review in that paper pleased me best, and appeared to me fullest in purport and style. The Sun is very thin and brief. There was also one, a very favourable notice, in the Athenæum, and I hear that the Westminster Review promises in warm language an early paper. [1] After all, I suppose the reviewers cannot do much for the ultimate adversity or prosperity of any book, however they may retard the evil or hasten the good, and this is as it should be.”
