Offered for sale by John Wilson, Catalogue 3, item 18. 1 p., 16mo. Thanking her correspondent for a volume of poems, [2] and commenting on them in third person, EBB “ventures to prefer as finished productions, the lyrics, whether Scotch or English, to the longer poem—and she is happy to recognise the characteristic colouring of some of the songs, and the turns of grace and sweetness in others of them. She begs to offer her best wishes to Mr. Bennoch’s ‘Muse’ (addressed in the last pages).”
1. Francis Bennoch (1812-90), whose portrait B.R. Haydon was painting at this time, was a partner with Richard Twentyman as a silk dealer in Cheapside. See nos. 159 and 169 in Pope’s checklist (Pope, V, 598-599); see also SD1216.
2. Perhaps a copy of Bennoch’s The Storm, and Other Poems (1841) which had gone into a second edition in 1843.
