Miss Barrett presents her compliments to Mr Welford [2] & thanks him much for a courtesy which she well remembers is not the first she has received from him. She will offer her separate acknowledgements in a letter to Mrs Osgood herself. [3]

1. Year provided by EBB’s reference to Frances Osgood, a note from whom EBB mentions in letter 2347.
2. Charles Welford (1815–85), an English writer and bookseller, had emigrated to America early in the previous decade, and was a junior partner in the New York firm of Bartlett and Welford. According to Cornelius Mathews, it was at Welford’s “store that the first copy of [EBB’s] Poems, was …ever seen, in America” (letter 1426).
