I thank you my dear Mary for the pleasure I have had from your books, which is deep & warm .. notwithstanding all that may be said of their wildnesses. Perhaps people who are rather wild at heart themselves are less startled at these things—at any rate, the truths & passion in the books have touched me deeply.

I thank you too for your kind questions, & am able to say that I am making very confident progress in strength, & that if you or some other enchantress would but stop the wheels of the summer for me, I might hope to overtake the utmost kindness of your wishes for me, perhaps. In the meantime I look forward .. (not quite so far ..) to being face to face with you some day,—& I ask you to think of me as
