2118. RB to Eliot Warburton
As published in The Brownings’ Correspondence, 11, 207.
New Cross, Hatcham,
Nov. 28. [1845] [1]
My dear Warburton,
Thank you most heartily for your kindness, [2] which affects me as if I were not used to it: the few opportunities I have had of seeing you gave me too much gratification not to make the possibility of one day seeing more, very delightful.
I sent you Landor’s generous lines from a real sense of the right you had to be relieved, as soon as might be, from your perilous position—for your letter of praise and encouragement was the first notice I received [3] —and with such incentives to well-doing there is but little danger of my ceasing to work on cheerfully whatever be the fruit of the endeavour– In any case, I forget nothing and am
ever your faithful &
obliged
R Browning.
Publication: None traced.
Manuscript: Armstrong Browning Library.
1. The year is provided by RB’s reference to “Landor’s generous lines” (see letter 2094).
2. Perhaps for a letter from Warburton in reply to RB’s having sent him a copy of Landor’s verse.
