My dear Browning

We are compelled to postpone our Dinner! We have this moment received news of the death of Madame de Viry’s husband [2] —(I mean my wife’s sister)– I hope to see you shortly however. In the meantime I am

Always your very sincere

B. W. Procter

Address: Robt Browning Esqr / Hatcham / New Cross / Surrey.

Publication: None traced.

Manuscript: University of Chicago.

1. Dated by RB’s reference in the following letter to this “note from Procter.”

2. In October 1840, Mrs. Procter’s younger half-sister, Emily Montagu, had married William Augustus Victor Joseph, Chevalier de Viry, Equerry to the King of Sardinia. RB tells EBB in the following letter that the Count’s death occurred “abroad,” but we have been unable to trace further details.
