1. See letter 2152, note 2, for an earlier letter to Miss Gillies and explanatory note regarding identification. This letter could very well be to Margaret Gillies, as she was a miniaturist and RB refers to “the pictures’ company.” Mary Gillies was a writer.

2. “Toody he means” has been written on the manuscript in an unidentified hand.
