2449. RB to Euphrasia Fanny Haworth

Offered for sale in Goodspeed’s Catalogue, ca. 1947. 3 pp. RB writes: “You have made a good choice of a publisher—they made me a very good, indeed a very good offer for a book which I shall most assuredly accept if the said book is ever written. About the ‘sonnet’ [2] —I shall be always proud of your early praise and friendship.”
1. We have placed this letter a month following letter 2392 as they appear to be related to the same project. As in the earlier letter, this could have been written nearer the date of publication (January 1847), but not later than RB’s departure to Italy in September. Jeremiah How was the eventual “choice of publisher.”
2. RB is responding to Fanny Haworth’s request to include in her forthcoming volume, St. Sylvester’s Day, and Other Poems (1847), the second of two sonnets entitled “On the Author of Paracelsus,” which appeared in The New Monthly Magazine, September 1836 (XLVIII, p. 48). For St. Sylvester’s Day, it was retitled “The Young Poet. 1836,” and appeared on page 103. It is of interest to note that Miss Haworth also published in the 1847 volume a sonnet “To Miss Barrett, on Hearing of Her Secluded Life from Illness.”
