My dear Sir,

I am very sorry to give such trouble, but the sheets you sent me, tho’ they filled up the gap in question, have made another at the end,—for I am obliged to send away with my 81, all the following sheets, which are consecutive, & evidently belong to your copy. The circuitous route of your letters prevented my recieving them till the day before yesterday,—but, an hour afterwards, we drank your health with those most sincere wishes you gave us credit for feeling. You will find, by the enclosure, [1] that I have dared to attempt something more. It would be daring a great deal too much, if I had any less indulgence to treat with; but yours have shewn itself verse-proof, I venture to send what is unworthy of the subject in every respect, except in that of speaking truth. I hope you will recieve this on the right day, tho’ on the wrong week,—&, so, have, in addition to the many happy years we wish you, a whole week d’avance.
