Mrs Browning presents her compliments to Mr Duyckinck [2] & thanks him much for his kindness in sending her the new American Journal, [3] which in spirit & ability makes no common promises & suggestions. It gives her pleasure to hear in Italy of her American friends .. especially of Mr Mathews to whom she wrote some months ago from Pisa, & is still hoping to be written to in turn. The name Duyckinck was pleasantly associated in Mrs Browning’s recollection through what Mr Mathews told her, (it is only grateful to say) before she received from Mr G L Duyckinck the courtesy she now thanks him for.

1. In the following letter, dated 12 May [1847], EBB refers to a visit from an American, and the new periodical which he sent. SD1319 indicates that Duyckinck was the American. 10 May 1847 was the previous Monday.
2. George Long Duyckinck (1823–63), American editor. He and his brother Evert Augustus Duyckinck (1816–78), together with their brother-in-law John Albert Panton, were travelling together in Italy at this time.
3. The “new American Journal” has not been identified, but may be the same one EBB describes in the following letter quite differently as “a new literary periodical of the old world.” See note 5 in the following letter.
