My dear Sir,

Lady Mary Shepherd [2] is very desirous of being acquainted with you, (in spite of your anti-mathematical propensities[)]. She proposes accompanying me some morning when I go to visit you, if it should not be disagreable to you to receive her. Will you let me know?– I have not been able to compass seeing you today, & need not say that I am sorry!–

1. The mode of salutation places this letter in 1828. The following letter, however, which continues the reference to Lady Mary Shepherd, addresses Boyd as “My dear friend,” a less formal salutation used first in July 1828.

2. Lady Mary Shepherd (1777–1847), second daughter of the 3rd Earl of Rosebery, was the author of two philosophical works.
