Dear Miss Clarke,

After vainly intending to find a moment & call upon you on our last day in Paris, it only remains for me to give you the meeting in Italy where we are going. Your letter reached me on the last night but one of our stay in Paris, and you know the hurry & pressure of last engagements in those last hours—but in Italy we shall meet—in Florence, & Rome .. & therefore there is not much to regret for either of us.

1. Possibly miswritten for l’Univers, which is in the return address of letter 3143, and which is the only Lyons hotel listed in the Brownings’ address book of this period (AB-3). Although there was a Hôtel de l’Europe in Lyons, the Brownings spent only one night in that city, and there is no indication that they changed hotels.

2. Dated by reference to the return address. The Brownings left Paris Saturday, 23 October 1852. They spent Monday, 25 October 1852, at Lyons.
