Dear Mrs Browning—I am very sorry not to find you at home– I met the Miss Thackerays at your stair foot & promised to tell you for them that they would come to you this evening with pleasure[.] [2]

1. Approximate dating based on Fanny Kemble’s reference to the Thackeray girls, who visited the Brownings frequently between their arrival in Rome in early December 1853 and their departure in February 1854.

2. This message is written on a calling card, on which is printed: “Mrs. F.A. Kemble.”
