My dear Miss Channing

You will easily believe me that I am sorry to break my Penini’s engagement with you today when I tell you that he is not at all well enough for such a pleasure– He has had a sort of colic this morning which obliges us to put him under discipline—& which I hope is of no consequence beyond the disappointment of the day, though the least sign of suffering in him of course puts me to pain & makes me anxious– <***> [2]
