My dear Sir,

It is now some weeks since I received your note: I ought to have thanked you sooner for the great pleasure it gave me—or “us,” I may say, for my wife’s feeling should be expressed too, and such sympathy as yours and Mrs Higginson’s is precious to us both. We hope to see you, and all American friends, face to face some day,—but the better relationship has been established long ago. We have hitherto failed to see as much of Miss Channing as we wished and expected—but the next week or two may be more favorable.
