1. Stephen Higginson Perkins (1804–77), son of Samuel Gardner Perkins (1767–1847), a Boston merchant, and his wife Barbara (née Cooper, 1774–1843). He was travelling with family: three sons, by his first wife, and his only daughter Elizabeth (“Lizzie”) Welles Perkins (1849–1928), by his second wife Elizabeth (née Welles, 1816–49). Also in the party was his niece Barbara Higginson Channing (see letter 3317, note 2).
