I return the ‘Peep of Day,’ my dear Mrs Read, [2] with a great many thanks. Penini has read it through & liked it exceedingly, and I should have carried it back myself to you if the weather admitted of my going out.

2. Mary J. Read (née Pratt, 1818–55) had married Thomas Buchanan Read at Boston in 1843. They had three children: a boy who died in infancy (1853), Alice (1845–70), and Lilian (d. 1855).
