1. Charles Hallé (formerly Carl Halle, 1819–95), Prussian-born pianist and conductor, had moved to England from Paris in 1848, settling at Manchester soon afterwards. Ten years later he formed the Hallé Orchestra in that city, where he also helped found the Royal Manchester College of Music in 1893. He was knighted in 1888 for his contributions to music in the United Kingdom. RB and Hallé became friends in the mid-1860’s, and the latter is mentioned in the last line of RB’s “The Founder of the Feast” (1884).
