Dear Sir Edward,

What can we say to so much kindness—but that it saves us from trying to say much in the way of excuse for not accepting it—there can be but one reason for that– I fear I have stretched too much the leave your note implies of waiting for a better chance than has yet fallen to us– I mean, I should have answered it before—pray forgive me in that case—and be sure that if our engagements allow we will do one good thing to remember and take the hour you offer us.
