My dear Arlette,

It’s mortification & grief to me to have to go away after all without seeing you, but what with the weather & what with rather the crush than press of engagements, we are driven on to the last day (Robert waiting for me & I for him) and we are forced to leave England tomorrow & give up our visit to you–

Now I do entreat you & Mr Reynolds not to think it unkind of us– You are two of the last to whom we would seem unkind. We shall be back next year if it pleases God, & catch up the thread of our many unfulfilled duties & pleasures—& see more of you, dear Arlette, I do trust.

Till when, may God bless & love you. With my husband’s cordial regards to your’s, I remain
